Do you need IEC health insurance?
By Dane Stewart
If you’re moving to Canada from the UK on an IEC Working Holiday, you need health insurance before you arrive in Canada.
You may see this called “IEC health insurance,” “IEC travel insurance,” or “Working Holiday insurance.” The name is less important than the details of the coverage. To receive your IEC work permit at the border, your insurance must cover medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation for the full length of time you want to stay in Canada.
This is one of the most important purchases you need to make before your Working Holiday. If your insurance is valid for less than your intended stay, your work permit will be issued only until the date your insurance expires. And – you cannot fix this later by buying more insurance after you arrive.
So, what is the best IEC health insurance provider for UK travellers?
There’s no single correct answer. Some providers are better for winter sports coverage, some are better for travellers who will be back and forth between Canada and the UK, and some are better for those seeking options for things like trip cancellation or lost baggage.
The right choice depends on how long you plan to stay, what kind of work you’ll do, what activities you’ll be doing, and what you’re willing to pay.

This is not a ranking from best to worst. A UK traveller who wants a simple way to compare Canadian IEC policies can start with BestQuote – a fast and free tool for comparing different options. Meanwhile, a traveller who has already left the UK may find True Traveller more flexible, as they allow travellers to purchase insurance while already travelling.
Someone planning a winter of snowboarding in Whistler needs to pay close attention to winter sports cover. And someone planning construction or resort work has to read the work exclusions carefully before purchasing a plan.
What Insurance Do UK Citizens Need for IEC Canada?
International Experience Canada participants must have health insurance that covers:
- medical care
- hospitalization
- repatriation
Your insurance must cover the full period you want to stay in Canada. For UK citizens, IEC Working Holiday work permits can be issued for up to 24 months, but the officer at the port of entry can shorten your work permit if your insurance is valid for a shorter period.
This is one reason a cheap 12-month policy could be a costly mistake. If you want a 24-month IEC work permit, arrive with insurance that covers the full 24 months.
A provincial health card for a Canadian province will not satisfy the IEC health insurance requirement. Provincial healthcare does not normally cover repatriation, which is one of the mandatory IEC insurance requirements.
IEC Health Insurance vs IEC Travel Insurance
IRCC calls the requirement “IEC health insurance.” But – a few years ago, IRCC used to call it “IEC travel insurance.” As a result, many travellers and insurance providers still call it “IEC travel insurance.”
For this article, we use both terms because UK travellers search for information on both. The critical thing is whether the policy meets the IEC requirement and fits your actual plans in Canada.
A standard travel insurance policy could include baggage, cancellation, personal liability, or trip interruption. Those benefits can be useful, but they are not the core IEC requirement. For your work permit, the key question is whether the policy covers emergency medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation for the full length of your intended stay.

BestQuote
BestQuote is the best place to start if you want to compare Canadian IEC insurance options side by side. It provides an essential tool for all IEC participants.
Unlike a traditional insurance provider, BestQuote offers a comparison tool. This can be helpful if you want to see how different coverage levels, deductibles, and winter sports options affect your quote. BestQuote also has an IEC-specific insurance page, which makes it more relevant than a generic travel insurance comparison site.
The main thing to remember is that comparison tools still require careful reading. Before buying always double-check the policy length, emergency medical coverage, repatriation wording, winter sports rules, work exclusions, refund rules, and whether the policy covers your full intended stay.
IEC is an essential part of researching your IEC health insurance options. We strongly recommend taking the time to compares quotes and policy options with BestQuote before committing to a provider.
BestQuote has a strong reputation with 4.6-stars on Google.
If you use BestQuote as a price comparison tool, BestQuote itself might not be your actual insurance provider. It’s important to research whichever provider you choose to work with.
Good for: UK travellers who want to compare IEC health insurance options in one place.
True Traveller
True Traveller is one of the strongest UK-facing options for IEC participants because they’ve built a customizable insurance package specifically for UK residents doing a working holiday in Canada.
Its IEC insurance package covers all the mandatory requirements: medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation. And – beyond the basics True Traveller allows you to customize your plan to fit your needs.
Already in Canada? You can buy a package for travellers who’ve already departed. Need coverage for skiing? You can add different levels of winter sports coverage. Want to pay a smaller deductible? You can choose to pay more upfront to reduce your deductible.
The True Traveller website is user-friendly and allows you to explore your options easily. Aside from the flexibility and ease of use, True Traveller has been around for years and has a strong reputation as a credible and trustworthy option for UK travellers seeking IEC insurance with a 4.5-star rating on Google and a 3.8-star rating on Trustpilot
When researching True Traveller’s options, you need to read the activity and work cover carefully. Some jobs or activities may require an activity pack. If you may ski, snowboard, work in a resort, do manual labour, or take a job involving physical risk, check the policy wording before buying.
Good for: UK travellers who want a flexible IEC health insurance option with customizable coverage.
Big Cat Travel Insurance
Big Cat is another solid UK option for IEC travellers. It has a dedicated IEC travel insurance page and offers cover for up to 24 months, which makes it relevant for UK citizens hoping to receive the full length of their IEC Working Holiday work permit.
Big Cat offers specific insurance packages for IEC participants. These packages cover the basic IEC requirements, while offering flexible options for other coverage details. This means you can choose a plan that suits your needs, whether you’re already in Canada, plan to go skydiving, or want to work in a higher-risk job during your Working Holiday.
As with all IEC insurance options, you need to check and double-check the details of the policy that interests you.
Big Cat has a solid rating of 3.4 on Google with a 4.6 rating on Trustpilot.
Good for: UK travellers who want a flexible IEC insurance option with customizable coverage.
Go Walkabout
Go Walkabout is a UK provider with dedicated policy options for IEC working holidaymakers. Like many of the providers listed above, Go Walkabout allows you to customize your insurance plan to fit your needs regarding activity levels, winter sports coverage, and more.
Go Walkabout has a few limitations. They can only offer coverage for trips that start in the UK and that haven’t yet commenced. So, if you’re already out of the country, they aren’t the provider for you. Similarly, they can’t insure ski instructors. So, if you wanted to teach skiing in Banff, you’re going to have to find another option.
Go Walkabout is highly rated online with 4.1 stars on Google and 4.7 stars on Trustpilot.
They’re a solid option to include in your research. As with all providers, double-check all parts of your policy, especially regarding any coverage specific to your needs like manual labour, outdoor activities, or winter sports.
Good for: UK travellers who haven’t yet left the UK and want a flexible IEC insurance option with customizable coverage.
World Nomads
We’ve included World Nomads on our list because they’re a well-known travel insurance brand and many long-term travellers will recognize it. If you don’t recognize the company, they’ll likely pop up during your research.
World Nomads is a reputable brand with a variety of options for insurance coverage. That being said, unlike the options listed above, World Nomads doesn’t have a specific IEC insurance package. However, you can absolutely use World Nomads to build a policy that meets all IEC requirements, it just might take a little bit more work on your end (and require a rigorous double check at the end!).
For IEC Canada, the question is whether the specific policy available to UK residents can cover the full period you want to stay and clearly includes medical care, hospitalization, and repatriation. This is especially important for UK citizens aiming for a 24-month IEC work permit.
World Nomads has a 4.3 rating on Trustpilot.
Good for: UK travellers who are willing to build their own IEC coverage using World Nomads’ existing options.
How to Choose IEC Insurance for Canada
The best IEC insurance policy is the one that matches your actual plans in Canada. Before buying, work through these questions.
How long do you want to stay in Canada?
If you want a 24-month IEC work permit, buy insurance that covers 24 months. Your work permit will only be issued until the date of expiration of your insurance policy. Do not arrive with 12 months of coverage and assume you can extend later: you can’t.
Will you ski or snowboard?
Winter sports are rarely included automatically in IEC insurance policies. If you plan to ski, snowboard, snowshoe, snowmobile, or spend the winter in a resort town, check whether you need to add winter sports cover. And be prepared for the price increase as winter sports coverage often results in a significantly more expensive policy.
This is especially important in Canada. Many IEC participants arrive with no firm winter plans, then end up in Banff, Whistler, Revelstoke, Fernie, Jasper, or Mont-Tremblant.
What kind of work might you do?
IEC gives you an open work permit, but your insurance policy may still exclude certain types of work.
Check the rules if you may work in construction, manual labour, agriculture, ski resorts, childcare, healthcare, hospitality, outdoor work, or any job involving machinery, heights, animals, or physical risk.
Will you visit home during your stay?
Some policies allow temporary visits home. Others may suspend cover while you are in your home country or have specific rules about return trips. If you think you may go back to the UK during your Working Holiday, check this before buying.
Are you already travelling?
Some providers require you to buy before you leave the UK. Others may allow you to buy after departure or after arriving in Canada, as long as you have not already had an incident that could lead to a claim.
This can be helpful for travellers already abroad, but it should not be used as a reason to delay buying insurance before entering Canada for IEC. You still need the right proof of insurance when you arrive at the port of entry.
What is the excess or deductible?
A cheaper policy may have a higher excess or deductible. That means you may pay more out of pocket if you need to claim. Compare the total policy, not just the headline price.
What happens if you leave Canada early?
Some providers may offer partial refunds if you return home early and have not made a claim. Others may not. This can be worth checking if you are not completely sure whether you will stay in Canada for the full two years.
Should You Buy the Cheapest IEC Insurance?
Price matters, but IEC insurance is not a great place to make the cheapest possible choice without reading the details.
A cheaper policy may be enough for one traveller and completely wrong for another. The difference often comes down to duration, winter sports, work exclusions, excess, emergency assistance, refund rules, and whether the policy can clearly satisfy the IEC requirement.
Instead of looking for the cheapest policy, compare a few providers using the same trip dates and the same assumptions. Try quotes with and without winter sports. Check how the price changes with different excess levels. Then read the policy wording before buying.

When Should UK Travellers Buy IEC Insurance?
Buy IEC insurance after you receive your port of entry letter and before you travel to Canada.
Do not leave this until the airport. You should arrive in Canada with proof that your insurance covers the full time you want your work permit to be valid.
If you are already travelling before entering Canada, be extra careful. Some providers may allow purchase after departure, but others may not. The border officer will still want to see proof of insurance when you arrive to activate your IEC work permit.
Can You Extend IEC Insurance After Arriving in Canada?
Some insurance providers may allow extensions. That does not solve the IEC work permit problem: the Canadian border officer will only issue a work permit with a duration as long as your IEC health insurance policy. You cannot extend your work permit later by extending your insurance package.
If you arrive with 12 months of insurance, the border officer may issue a 12-month work permit, even if you were eligible for 24 months. IEC work permits cannot be extended later just because you bought more insurance.
If you want the full 24 months, arrive with proof of insurance for the full 24 months.
Our Recommendation for UK IEC Travellers
For many UK travellers, the safest first step is to compare a few IEC insurance options side by side using BestQuote.
BestQuote is useful because it lets you compare Canadian IEC insurance options in one place. This can help you understand how different deductibles, coverage levels, and winter sports choices affect your quote.
It is still worth checking specialist UK providers directly. True Traveller is a strong option for flexibility, Big Cat is worth comparing if you want IEC-specific long-stay cover with winter sports options, and Go Walkabout may be useful if you want to match your policy to specific work and activity plans.
The best policy is the one that covers your full intended stay, satisfies the IEC requirement, and fits the way you actually plan to live, work, and travel in Canada.
