Last week, many of Canada’s major banks blocked personal AI agents from accessing their systems. They aren’t doing this to make your life harder – it's because of the pretty significant safety and security concerns those AI agents bring.

If you’re a little unsure about why AI agents pose a risk and why banks are banning them, we’re here to help you understand.

Key Takeaways

  • AI Agents can help with some administrative tasks to make your life easier. But you should think carefully about the access you give them.
  • The more access an AI agent has, the bigger the consequences can be if something goes wrong.
  • Giving an AI agent your banking password could break your bank’s rules and leave you responsible for losses.

AI agents can be genuinely useful, but it’s worth giving careful thought before you let them access personal information, especially sensitive information like your finances.

How we reported this story:

I reviewed the terms of service for multiple banks and read multiple news articles about the ban, including CBC reports. It was reviewed by another team member before publishing, too.

What Are AI Agents?

AI Agents are systems built on artificial intelligence that carry out tasks for you. They’re different from the AI platforms you may be used to because they don’t just answer questions, they work towards a goal often by completing series of steps.

Meta’s AI agent Muse is one of the most well known AI agents, alongside OpenAI’s Dots. But there are more and more of these agents popping up seemingly each week at the moment.

A clue that the platform/software/tool you’re using is an AI agent, not just an LLM, is that it works on multi-step tasks. Examples are:

  • Sorting your inbox, flagging urgent emails, and drafting replues.
  • Finding meeting times that work for everyone and preparing the event and invitation.
  • Turning meeting notes into a task list and assigning those tasks.
  • Drafting reports, presentations or social media posts from your notes or data.
  • Renaming and sorting files and photos.
  • Filling out routine forms.

Why Are AI Agents Risky?

AI Agents sound great, right? They take the boring tasks and automate them, woo!

But, the fact that they have the ability to complete several steps (not just tell you what to do), is also what makes them risky.

There have already been several high-profile examples of AI agents misunderstanding or ignoring instructions, including:

  • An AI agent deleted emails in the inbox of an AI safety director at Meta because of flaws in its memory.

Worth noting is that many of these AI agents ignored instructions to ‘only make suggestions’, and some even kept going after being told to stop.

The key takeaway here: The agent’s level of access defines how risky the consequences of it going rogue are. And that’s why banks are limiting or outright banning AI agent access in Canada.

Generally, banks are concerned that the will not know whether an agent is doing something you asked it to do or not. Initial tests that they did allow found that AI agents appeared to take steps beyond what the customer had asked.

What Risks Are There if AI Agents Access Banks

There are quite a few very serious risks that AI agents could pose, including:

  • Incorrect payments, for example, could overpay a bill or pay the wrong person. Given that some bank transfers are instant and final, it’s possible (or even likely) that you wouldn’t be able to get the money back.
  • Scammers could trick the agent by sending fake bills with hidden instructions to your email.
  • Your banking login could be breached or misused.
  • It could make bad money decisions. AI Agents are not licensed financial advisors, and they could move money or make investments that lose your money.

There are also privacy risks, and handing your bank password to an AI agent may give away your privacy to the company that created the agent. Many people think that they have nothing worth hiding so privacy doesn’t matter. An alternative perspective is that privacy keeps some parts of your life to yourself as opposed to hiding ‘bad’ things, just like shutting the bathroom door or putting curtains on your windows.

Using an AI Agent May Mean Losing Your Bank’s Protections

So, we know many of the banks are limiting or banning AI agents. But what if you find a loophole that lets you use one, or if the policies change? The risks are likely on you.

Many of the banks have a specific term that says something like “never share your credentials” or similar. If you do, then you may be liable for losses or damages.

Basically, this means that if you share your password with an AI agent and you lose money as a result, the bank’s ‘usual’ protections don’t apply. For example, some banks offer reimbursement for unauthorized transactions – but this doesn’t apply if you share your credentials with someone else. (This is also true in the case of scams where scammers trick you into giving them your password and other login details.)

It’s worth taking a quick look at your bank’s service terms to see what limits apply and what your responsibilities are when it comes to protecting your passwords, PINs, and cards. I know I was surprised by a few of them when I read mine!

The Money Lesson Here: Don’t Pay for Convenience with Lost Financial Control

The big lesson here isn’t really about AI. It’s a new application of an old rule: don’t give anyone more access than the job needs.

You wouldn’t (or you shouldn’t!) give someone you just met your bank card and PIN because they promised to pay your bills for you. AI agents haven’t earned that trust either.

So, for online banking, your personal finances, and more broadly – remember that the convenience does come with a cost: lost control. Make sure that wherever you give up that control, you understand the risks that come with it.
