The highly anticipated International Experience Canada (IEC) 2025 season has officially opened, and candidates from eligible countries are already entering the pools.

If you’re eligible, now is the time to act since the first draw for select countries will take place in the week of January 13.

IEC 2025 Pools Are Open

As of December 16, 2024, eligible participants can create their profiles and join the IEC pools. With spots in high demand, early action is crucial to maximize your chances of receiving an invitation to apply for a Canadian work permit.

If you’re serious about coming to Canada under the IEC program, make sure your profile is submitted to the pools before the first round of invitations in the week of January 13.  The earlier you join, the better your chances of being selected!

What’s New in IEC 2025?

For the 2025 season, applicants are required to pay an increased IEC work permit fee of CAN$179.75, up from the previous fee of CAN$172.

Interestingly, despite the program opening, a complete list of quotas and the timeline for the first round of invitations have not yet been announced. To maximize your chances and ensure you don’t miss out, it’s crucial to submit your profile as soon as possible.

A full list of quotas is available on our IEC news hub page. Information will be updated as it is made available.

IEC Process Overview

The International Experience Canada (IEC) program allows young people from eligible countries to work and travel in Canada. With three unique streams—Working Holiday, Young Professionals, and International Co-op (Internship)—the IEC offers flexible opportunities to gain valuable international work experience while exploring Canada.

Participants can live and work for up to 36 months, depending on their country of origin, though most participants will have either a 12-month or 24-month maximum validity on their work permit. Spots are limited, so creating a profile early in the IEC pools increases your chances of receiving an invitation to apply for a Canadian work permit.

The reason your chances increase is because IEC invitations are issued through a lottery. So you are exposed to more lottery draws the longer you’re in the pool. IRCC does not use a First In, First Drawn model, so getting in early still does not guarantee you a spot. But entering the pool later does reduce your chances (especially if you’re from a country that does not have an unlimited quota – which is most countries).

Here is a quick overview of the process:

Enter the IEC Pool

  • Create a profile on the IRCC portal to enter the IEC pool for your eligible category: Working Holiday, Young Professionals, or International Co-op (Internship).
  • Profiles remain in the pool for the entire season, but applying early increases your chances of being invited to apply.

Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

  • Invitations to Apply (ITAs) are issued during random rounds throughout the IEC season. If selected, you’ll receive an ITA via your IRCC account.
  • You’ll have 10 calendar days to accept the ITA. Declining keeps your profile in the pool; accepting moves you to the next step.

Submit Your Work Permit Application

  • After accepting the ITA, you’ll have 20 calendar days to complete and submit your work permit application online.
  • You’ll need to upload the required documents, including a police certificate, proof of funds, and a medical exam if applicable.
  • Pay the application fee (including a participation fee, biometrics and an open work permit fee, if applicable).

Receive Work Permit Approval

  • After submitting your application, IRCC will review it. Processing times can vary.
  • Once approved, you’ll receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction. This document is required to obtain your work permit when you arrive in Canada.

Land in Canada

  • You have 12 months from the date of approval to enter Canada. At the border, present your POE Letter, valid passport, proof of funds, travel insurance, and any other required documents to receive your work permit.

What to Do If You’ve Already Maxed Out Your IEC Participation

If you’ve reached the maximum number of participations under the IEC program, there are still ways to work and travel in Canada. One of the best options is through a Recognized Organization (RO).

What Are Recognized Organizations?

Recognized Organizations (ROs) are approved by the Canadian government to facilitate IEC experiences. They often offer additional services, like visa assistance, job placements, and support during your stay. Importantly, ROs can sponsor individuals for additional IEC participation, even if you’ve maxed out your standard eligibility.

Important Things to Note:

  • Limited Spots: ROs have a limited number of sponsorships available, so competition is high.
  • High Costs: ROs may charge significant fees for their services. Be sure to research the costs before applying.
  • Waitlists: Many ROs operate on a first-come, first-served basis and have waitlists for their programs.

What You Should Do Now:

  1. Research Recognized Organizations: Identify an RO that aligns with your goals and meets your eligibility criteria.
  2. Apply Quickly: Apply as soon as possible to increase your chances of securing a spot.
  3. Explore Alternative Options: If an RO doesn’t work out, consider other visa pathways like employer-specific work permits or permanent residency programs.
