Our Analysis of this Express Entry Draw

IRCC has issued 2,000 invitations to apply (ITAs) in today’s Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draw, with a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 519, a drop of two points from the previous CEC draw two weeks prior.

Today’s draw has maintained 2,000 ITAs, the same number as the CEC draw two weeks ago, but still on the lower end for CEC draws in 2026. Back in August, however, we saw the smallest CEC draw of the year, with only 1,000 ITAs issued in the August 18 CEC draw, so the recent return to larger draw sizes is welcome news for many CEC candidates.

The Sept. 15 draw occurred earlier in the day than usual, before IRCC’s regular working hours. The reason for the early timing is unclear, though it may have to do with website maintenance IRCC has scheduled later in the day.

Prior to August 18, all 2026 CEC draws issued at least 2,000 invitations, with some draws issuing 4,000, 6,000, and even 8,000 ITAs in a single draw. This kept the CRS score relatively stable within a range of 507 and 518 up until the small draw in August, which caused the CRS score cut-off to jump to 523 points. As of today, however, the CRS score cut-off is continuing to fall back towards average levels for the year at 519 points.

The latest Express Entry pool update (as of September 13) shows 20,784 candidates candidates with a CRS score between 501 and 600. This is a notable increase from the 19,542 candidates in the same range during the previous update on August 30. And, it’s significantly higher than in July (on July 19 there were 18,133 candidates in this range). This suggests that there may be a higher rate of competitive candidates entering the pool than of those being drawn from the pool. If this trend continues, the CRS score cut-off could remain elevated.

It’s not only been a huge year for Express Entry overall, but also a huge year for CEC. As of today’s draw, CEC candidates have received a total of 53,250 invitations this year. That’s about 42 percent of all ITAs issued in 2026, a notable proportion, especially considering the overall number of ITAs. Though, it’s worth noting that in August, French-draws briefly surpassed CEC draws to issue the highest number of ITAs in a single program or category throughout 2026.

However, the record-setting pace of ITAs has given many analysts—our team included!—a suspicion that Express Entry draws could slow down as we near the end of 2026. We’re not sure exactly when the slowdown will start or how long it will last. In fact, the recent pace of CEC draws, with small and modest ITAs, might be evidence that the slowdown is upon us already. Express Entry hopefuls should prepare for fewer invitations to be issued and what that could mean for their immigration plans.

What Does This Mean for CEC Candidates?

If your CRS score is close to or above the recent cut-off range of 507 to 523, you have good reason to feel optimistic. Although CEC draw frequency and size have recently been slowing down (and may slow further), Canada is committed to welcoming high numbers of skilled worker immigrants with a priority for those with Canadian work experience.

If your score is below the recent cut-offs, you may still have options. First, there could be ways to improve your CRS score. Many candidates increase their score by retaking a language test, adding second-language results, or gaining more skilled work experience.

You should also explore Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). A provincial nomination adds 600 additional CRS points, which almost guarantees an ITA through Express Entry.

If you have an accompanying spouse or common-law partner, their profile may also help improve your score. Language test results, education, and Canadian work experience from your partner can all contribute additional CRS points.

What’s Next for CEC?

It’s hard to predict with certainty. With a record-breaking year so far, it’s hard to know whether IRCC will continue with large draws for a little longer, or if they might slow down at some point. As of September, however, there are still thousands of invitations being issued every month. The relatively consistent CRS score cut-off range (507-523 points) allows CEC candidates to get a sense of their competitiveness.

A recent bombshell report suggested that CEC refusal rates have risen to more than 15 percent (up from four percent two years ago), which may warrant more ITAs being issued on an annual basis. This also suggests that candidates need to be diligent when preparing applications for permanent residence to ensure that they’re not refused for missing information or insufficient documentation.

If you’re getting ready to enter the Express Entry pool, keep in mind that IRCC recently announced plans for a massive overhaul of the Express Entry system. If it goes through, this overhaul will replace CEC, FSW, and FST with a single federal high skilled immigration program.

It’s possible that during the implementation of this overhaul, Express Entry draws will be paused so the system can be updated.

From an eligibility perspective, based on what we know about the reforms, skilled workers with Canadian work experience will still be competitive under the new program. However, we won’t know for sure until more details are released.
