Our Analysis of This Express Entry Draw

Today’s draw was the third Express Entry round specifically targeting senior managers with Canadian work experience.

IRCC issued 250 ITAs, down from the 500 invitations issued in the previous senior manager draw in July. However, the CRS cut-off fell slightly from 392 in July to 389 today, setting a new low for the category.

The difference is even more significant compared with the first senior manager draw in March. That round also issued 250 ITAs, but candidates needed a CRS score of at least 429.

This means the CRS cut-off for senior manager draws has now fallen by 40 points since the category’s first draw. This could indicate there are fewer eligible candidates with higher CRS scores in the pool.

What This Means for Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience Draws

Across the three rounds, IRCC has issued a total of 1,000 ITAs to eligible senior managers with Canadian work experience.

The relatively low CRS cut-offs can be particularly important for experienced professionals. CRS points for age begin declining after age 29, which can make it more difficult for older, more experienced candidates to reach the scores required in some other types of Express Entry draws.

To qualify for the senior manager category, you need at least 12 months of Canadian work experience within the past three years in one of four eligible senior management occupations. These cover senior managers in business services; health, education and social services; trade and other services; and construction, transportation, production and utilities. Your experience must be in a single eligible occupation, although it does not need to be continuous.

The three senior manager draws held so far have had progressively lower CRS cut-offs: 429 in March, 392 in July and 389 in September.

However, there is no guarantee that the next senior manager draw will have a similar or lower cut-off. It is also difficult to predict when (or if) another draw for this category could take place.

IRCC currently has 10 Express Entry categories to choose from, alongside program-specific draws such as those for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) and Provincial Nominee Program (PNP). IRCC has also said it may not need to hold a category-specific draw if enough eligible candidates are already being invited through other types of rounds.

What This Means for Express Entry Candidates

If you were eligible for the senior manager category and had a CRS score above 389, you should have received an ITA in today’s draw. If you did, you now have 60 days to submit your complete application for permanent residence.

If your score was exactly 389, you would have received an ITA only if you submitted your Express Entry profile before the tie-breaking date and time.

If your score is below 389, your profile will remain in the Express Entry pool and could still be considered in future draws.

If you qualify for this category but your CRS score is below recent cut-offs, you can look for ways to improve your score.

One of the most practical ways to gain additional points is to improve your language test results. Higher English or French scores can increase your core CRS points and, depending on your profile, may also increase the points you receive for skill transferability.

You may also be able to increase your score through additional Canadian work experience. CRS points for Canadian work experience increase as you gain more eligible experience, up to five years.

If you completed education outside Canada, make sure all eligible credentials have been assessed and included in your profile. Depending on your education history, an additional credential could increase your education and skill transferability points.

A provincial nomination can make the biggest difference. An Express Entry-aligned provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, which can significantly increase your chances of receiving an ITA in a future draw.

You should also make sure your Express Entry profile is accurate and up to date. Changes to your language scores, work experience, education or other circumstances can affect your CRS score and should be reflected in your profile.
