The online portal for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) was unavailable for many users on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, following scheduled maintenance. After several hours of issues, the portal now appears to be working for most users.
Update: As of 4:30pm EST on May 26, the IRCC portal appears to be back online and working normally for most users.
The outage caused issues for applicants both inside and outside Canada, with some users reporting missed appointments and difficulties submitting urgent requests documents like electronic Travel Authorizations (eTAs) required by some to board flights to Canada.
When Will the IRCC Portal Open Again?
As of 9:30am EDT, some users have already reported regaining access to the IRCC portal, while others continue to experience outages. The exact timing of the disruption remains unclear due to conflicting information shared by IRCC ahead of the maintenance period.
On Monday, IRCC published two separate social media posts with different timelines for the scheduled outage. One stated that online services would be unavailable from 12:00am to 5:30pm EDT on May 26, while another indicated services would only be down from 12:00am to 5:30am EDT.
Based on previous maintenance periods, a shorter overnight outage appears more likely. Extended daytime shutdowns of IRCC’s online services are relatively uncommon and can cause significant disruption for applicants around the world.
As of Tuesday morning, some users on X.com reported they were once again able to log into the portal, suggesting services may gradually be returning online.
If you are still unable to access the portal, IRCC recommends clearing your browser cache and trying again.
Why is the IRCC Portal Down?
IRCC periodically takes parts of its online system offline to perform scheduled maintenance and technical updates. During planned outages, the department usually notifies users in advance through web notices, emails, and social media updates.
In some cases, online services may also experience unplanned technical issues or intermittent disruptions during maintenance windows.
Following an outage, applicants are often advised to clear their browser cache before attempting to log back into IRCC systems.

Applicants Report Disruptions and Delays
As a result of IRCC’s service disruption on May 26, 2026, many individuals were left in difficult situations. On X.com, users flooded IRCC’s comments to voice their concern. One user wrote that they urgently needed access to submit an application ahead of an embassy appointment:
Still down for me as well… despite it being 7:11am EDT. When will services be back online? I need to submit an application urgently before an embassy appointment tomorrow…
— Alessandra Gage (@AlessandraGage) May 26, 2026
Another user voiced frustration in having missed an interview with IRCC:
When does the website come back up, I need to reschedule my interview because I missed it
— Just-Daniel+Rouges (@EsenyiDaniel) May 26, 2026
As of approximately 9:30am EDT, some applicants confirmed they were once again able to access the portal. However, others continued to report intermittent issues logging in.
For now, applicants experiencing problems may need to wait for services to stabilize and continue checking IRCC’s official channels for updates. And – be sure to clear your browser cache before trying again to access the portal.
For many applicants, the May 26 disruption serves as a stressful reminder of why it’s important not to leave immigration tasks until the final hours before a deadline. Whether it’s submitting an application, responding to a document request, or applying for an eTA before travel, unexpected technical problems can happen without warning.
While delays are sometimes unavoidable, it is important to give yourself as much buffer time as possible. IRCC outages, payment errors, internet issues, or browser problems can quickly derail a last-minute submission and create unnecessary stress for applicants already navigating a complex process.
