Use your hardware at home to allow you stream TV

There are a number of ways in which you can access your TV boxes and computers in your home country, and use them to allow you stream TV live from abroad.

Note that for these options, your home country’s internet connection will need to have a decent upload speed to allow you stream TV reliably.

One option is to consider installing software like TeamViewer on a computer in your home country, and on your computer in Canada.

It allows you to view and hear anything displayed on your home country’s computer, in real-time. This means you’ll be able to surf the internet from abroad via a computer in your home country.

A number of broadcasters have figured out ways to override VPNs and render them useless, so this is a reliable way to view content and stream TV abroad. It’s also handy for accessing files on your home PC from abroad, which is useful if you ever need anything.

Another option is Slingbox. This is a small box which connects to any cable/satellite box, and redistributes its signal over the internet via your own private account.

So for example, if you’re a Sky customer in the UK or Ireland, you could then watch whatever the receiver at home is displaying, simply by logging in to your Slingbox account, so you can stream TV in Canada.

It can work with almost any provider, and includes a virtual remote control that allows you to change the channel, access menus, and view recordings, all via your web browser.

The one downside, is that you, and whoever is at home, will need to watch the same channel at the same time. But if there’s a bedroom TV in your home country that doesn’t get used much, this could be an ideal way to keep everyone happy.

Other software and hardware to help stream TV

• Kodi is an all-in media player, which can pull data from a number of sources, including live TV.
• Chromecast is a stick that plugs into your TV’s HDMI port. It can stream video and audio from tabs in your Google Chrome browser, so when you stream TV, you can watch the stream on your actual TV.
