The International Experience Canada (IEC) age limit is one of the first things many applicants check before applying, but it can still cause some confusion.

If you’re close to your country’s maximum eligible age, you might be wondering whether you can still apply, and whether reaching or passing that age limit will affect your work permit.

The good news is that if you receive your Invitation to Apply (ITA) before the birthday that takes you over your country’s maximum age limit, you have passed the IEC age requirement. You can still submit your work permit application, even if your birthday happens after your ITA is issued.

Key Takeaways

  • For IEC participants, age eligibility is assessed when IRCC issues your Invitation to Apply (ITA).
  • After being approved to receive the full work permit duration available under your IEC agreement, make sure your passport is valid for the entire length of your intended stay and that you have IEC-compliant health insurance covering the full duration of your stay.
  • Age limits, work permit lengths, and participation rules vary by country and IEC category.

How the IEC Age Limit Works When You Enter the Pool and Apply

You can submit a profile to an IEC pool while you still meet your country’s age requirements. Your profile can remain in the pool until your birthday, when you no longer meet the age requirements set out under your country’s IEC agreement, or until the pool closes.

You can still submit your work permit application, even if you have your birthday after receiving the ITA. If your application is approved, you can enter Canada after reaching or passing the age limit, as long as you receive your Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction, travel before it expires, and meet all other entry requirements.

For example, a UK citizen who receives an ITA for an IEC Working Holiday at 35 can then submit their work permit application, even if they turn 36 after receiving the ITA.

If their application is approved, they will receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction and can activate their work permit before the POE expires. This means a UK applicant who receives their ITA at age 35 could enter Canada after turning 36 and still receive the full work permit duration available to UK citizens, provided they meet all other entry requirements.

The same age principle generally applies across IEC categories. Once you receive your ITA before the birthday that takes you over your country’s maximum eligible age, you have passed the IEC age requirement. If your application is then approved and you receive your POE, passing the maximum eligible age should not normally affect your ability to activate your work permit. However, maximum ages, work permit lengths, and participation rules vary by country and by IEC category, including Working Holiday, Young Professionals, and International Co-op.

Check Your Country’s Requirements

IEC is made up of agreements between Canada and 36 partner countries and territories. Each agreement has its own rules regarding:

  • Maximum age limits
  • Number of participations allowed
  • Work permit categories
  • Maximum work permit durations

Because of these differences, it’s always important to review the requirements that apply to your specific citizenship.

What Determines the Length of Your IEC Work Permit?

If you receive your Invitation to Apply (ITA) before the birthday that takes you over your country’s maximum eligible age, you have passed the IEC age requirement. You can then submit your work permit application, and if it’s approved, your age will generally not shorten the work permit you receive.

What matters more at that stage are your documents and deadlines. Most International Experience Canada (IEC) POE letters are valid for up to 12 months, which means you must travel to Canada and activate your work permit before your POE expires.

To maximise your chances of receiving the full work permit duration available under your country’s IEC agreement and category–whether that’s Working Holiday, Young Professionals, or International Co-op– make sure:

  • Your passport is valid for the entire length of your intended stay in Canada.
  • You activate your work permit before your POE expires.
  • You have IEC-compliant health insurance covering the full duration of your stay.

If you’ve already received an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for International Experience Canada (IEC), turning your country’s maximum eligible age before arriving in Canada will not normally affect your eligibility for a work permit or shorten the work permit issued to you.

However, it’s important to get your work permit application right. If your application is refused after you have passed your country’s maximum eligible age, you will not be able to re-enter the IEC pool or receive another ITA.

At that point, the most important thing to watch is not your birthday–it’s your application, documents, and deadlines. Make sure you submit a complete and accurate application. Ensure your passport is valid for the full length of your planned stay, activate your work permit before your POE expires, and you have IEC-compliant health insurance covering the entire time you intend to spend in Canada.
