Our Analysis of This Express Entry Draw
IRCC has invited 8,000 candidates with a minimum CRS score of 511 in the first Canadian Experience Class (CEC) draw of 2026. This is the largest CEC draw since February 13, 2021, when IRCC issued 27,332 invitations in a single round. In other words, it’s the second-largest CEC round in Express Entry history.
When IRCC invites this many candidates at once, it usually helps bring CRS cut-offs down, because the invitations reach deeper into the pool.
So far, 2026 is also following a similar early-year pattern to 2025. Last year started with a PNP draw first, followed by the first CEC draw on January 8, 2025, when IRCC invited 1,350 candidates with a CRS cut-off of 542.
Compared to that first CEC draw in 2025, today’s CRS cut-off is lower by 31 points, and the draw size is nearly six times larger. That’s a big shift, and it suggests IRCC is starting 2026 with a strong push to invite in-Canada workers early.
To get a sense of what this could mean for the rest of 2026, it helps to look at what CEC draws were like in 2025. Invitations varied widely in 2025; some CEC draws were small, with 1,000 invitations, while others were much larger, with up to 6,000 invitations. Even in the bigger draws, CRS scores stayed high because the pool remained very competitive.
Many in-Canada applicants were disappointed by how limited CEC invitations were overall. But the year ended on a high note for CEC candidates, with December 2025 issuing two massive CEC draws.
Overall, IRCC used CEC draws in 2025 in a flexible way. And that flexibility could matter even more in 2026. CEC draws may be especially important this year because Canada wants more people already working in Canada to become permanent residents. The government has set aside 33,000 PR spaces for in-Canada applicants across 2026 and 2027. We don’t yet know exactly how those spaces will be used, but CEC draws are one of the simplest ways for IRCC to invite those workers.
The big question now is how long IRCC keeps running big CEC draws like this, or if we go back to smaller rounds for most of the year.
What This Means for Candidates
If you’re eligible for CEC, this is a good reminder to make sure your Express Entry profile is fully up to date. That includes your work history, language results, and any changes to your job, education, or family situation.
This is also a good time to double-check how close you are to the CRS cut-off. If you’re just below it, small improvements, like retaking a language test or updating your work experience, can make a real difference.
What to Watch for in CEC Draws in 2026
The biggest thing to watch next is whether IRCC keeps up this high-volume CEC momentum. After two huge CEC draws in December 2025 (6,000 and 5,000 invitations), IRCC has now started 2026 with an even bigger round.
If IRCC continues holding large CEC draws like this, CRS scores could stay more stable or even slowly drop over time. But if CEC draws become smaller or happen less often, CRS cut-offs may stay high. That’s usually because there are many strong candidates in the pool.
It’s also worth watching for more news about the 33,000 PR spaces planned for in-Canada applicants for 2026 and 2027. We don’t know exactly how IRCC will use those spaces yet, but any updates could affect how big CEC draws are and how often they happen.
For now, CEC candidates should keep their profiles up to date and stay ready. If IRCC continues using CEC draws in a flexible way, bigger draws could happen with little warning.
