Web browser cookies

Our Site may use “cookies” to enhance User experience. User’s web browser places cookies on their hard drive for record-keeping purposes and sometimes to track information about them. We use Google Analytics and Google Advertising cookies to gather non-personally identifiable data about a User’s use of Moving2Canada. More personalized features will be added as the account expands.

Editorial and Commercial Data Separation

Moving2Canada collects and uses personal information for different purposes across its editorial, community, and commercial activities. Personal information collected for journalistic, editorial, or research purposes — including interviews, surveys, source communications, reader submissions, and news tips — is handled separately from personal information collected for marketing, lead-generation, account creation, partner offers, immigration assessments, quizzes, and newsletter subscriptions.

Where operationally feasible, information submitted for editorial or journalistic purposes is stored separately from Moving2Canada’s marketing and commercial databases. Access to editorial-source information is limited to team members, contractors, or service providers who require that information for editorial, research, moderation, or publishing purposes.

We do not use information submitted for journalistic research, interviews, surveys, or tips for direct marketing purposes unless the individual separately and expressly opts in to receive marketing communications or commercial offers.

Editorial Independence and Transparency

Moving2Canada publishes editorial content, including news, guides, analysis, and community information for newcomers to Canada. Sponsors, advertisers, commercial partners, and referral partners have no influence over our news reporting, editorial decisions, rankings, or story selection.

Any sponsored, promotional, affiliate, or partner-supported content will be identified in accordance with our editorial and publishing standards. Commercial relationships do not determine the substance of our editorial coverage.

Moving2Canada maintains editorial independence between its journalism, publishing, audience, and commercial functions, and seeks to provide transparent, accurate, and useful information to its readers and community.

Privacy by Design and Data Retention Schedule

Moving2Canada recognizes that some of the information it collects may relate to immigration circumstances, settlement planning, or other sensitive newcomer-related matters. For that reason, we aim to apply privacy-by-design principles when developing and operating our products, services, forms, editorial features, and community tools. This includes data minimization, role-based access, appropriate storage controls, retention limits, and periodic review of the personal information we hold.

We retain personal information only for as long as reasonably necessary for the purpose for which it was collected, to provide requested services, to meet legal, tax, accounting, fraud prevention, or reporting requirements, or to protect our legitimate business and editorial interests.

Retention of newsletter subscription data

Information collected for newsletter subscriptions is retained until the User unsubscribes or requests deletion.

Retention of editorial submissions, interviews, surveys, and reader tips

Information submitted for editorial, journalistic, research, survey, interview, or reader-tip purposes is retained for as long as necessary for editorial, legal, archival, and public-interest purposes, subject to applicable law and case-specific review.

Retention of contact form and customer support communications

Information submitted through contact forms or customer support channels is retained for up to 24 months after the matter is resolved, unless a longer retention period is required for legal, operational, or record-keeping purposes.

Retention of analytics and cookie-related data

Analytics, cookie-related, and similar usage data is retained in accordance with applicable consent settings, browser preferences, and the retention practices of the relevant service providers.

We may delete or anonymize personal information earlier where it is no longer required. We may also retain certain information for longer where necessary to comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce our agreements, detect or prevent misuse, or preserve editorial records in the public interest.

How we protect your information

We adopt appropriate data collection, storage and processing practices and security measures to protect against unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure or destruction of your personal information, username, password, transaction information and data stored on our Site.

Sharing your personal information

We do not sell, trade, or rent Users’ personal identification information to others. We may share generic aggregated demographic information not linked to any personal identification information regarding visitors and users with our business partners, trusted affiliates and advertisers for the purposes outlined above. The exception to this is where those who complete our Registration form choose to receive content from the Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank). Subscribers who check the respective box will have their data sent to the Bank of Nova Scotia and may receive email communications from them. Subscribers who choose to have their data sent to the Bank of Nova Scotia can opt-out of receiving these communications by clicking ‘Unsubscribe’ in emails they receive from the Bank of Nova Scotia.

Personal information collected for editorial research, interviews, surveys, or tips are not added to marketing distribution lists unless the individual separately opts in.

Deletion of your personal information

Users’ personal information can be deleted by Users from the Settings of their Account. Before choosing to delete their data, Users are reminded that deleting their Account will delete all of their data and automatically unsubscribe them from Moving2Canada emails and newsletters.

Requests to delete account or marketing data do not automatically require Moving2Canada to remove editorial content or archival material, which may be reviewed separately under our Correction and Removal Policy and applicable law.

Third-party websites

Users may find advertising or other content on our Site that link to the sites and services of our partners, suppliers, advertisers, sponsors, licensors and other third parties. We do not control the content or links that appear on these sites and are not responsible for the practices employed by websites linked to or from our Site. In addition, these sites or services, including their content and links, may be constantly changing. These sites and services may have their own privacy policies and customer service policies. Browsing and interaction on any other website, including websites which have a link to our Site, is subject to that website’s own terms and policies.

Advertising

Ads appearing on our site may be delivered to Users by advertising partners, who may set cookies. These cookies allow the ad server to recognize your computer each time they send you an online advertisement to compile non personal identification information about you or others who use your computer. This information allows ad networks to, among other things, deliver targeted advertisements that they believe will be of most interest to you. This privacy policy does not cover the use of cookies by any advertisers.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

Moving2Canada is fully compliant with GDPR in how we gather, store and process community data. Our Community’s trust is central to our success. We therefore aim to provide members with simple, convenient ways to interact with our services and retain control over the information they choose to share with us.

Measures we have taken:

  • Data Privacy Manager appointed to ensure GDPR compliance and prospective user experience and privacy concerns in the future.
  • Privacy policy updated to ensure it offers the required information and is easy to understand.
  • All data storage and processing service providers are compliant and provide the necessary security for stored data.
  • Data usage audited to ensure we do not process any user data in a way that violates GDPR.
  • Opt-in mechanisms audited and only interact with users who explicitly opt-in to receive communications and/ or services.
  • We have appropriate documentation in place, which details what data is passed on to whom.
  • Ensure users have easy access and control of their data.

Ensuring the responsible handling of member data has always been part of the ‘social contract’ we have with the Moving2Canada Community. Users may request access to, correction of, or deletion of their personal information, subject to applicable legal and editorial exemptions.
