Irish people in Vancouver are being invited to an upcoming night out, complete with an open trad session and plenty of craic.
The night out takes place at Billy Bishop Legion bar on 1407 Laburnum St in Kitsilano, next Thursday, May 18, from 6-10PM.
Organizer, Ruairi Spillane from Co Kerry, says he’s on a mission “to recreate our beloved local pub from home”.
“The Irish community in Vancouver has exploded in recent years. Recent arrivals may forget that there are lots of older Irish who have been living in Vancouver since the 50s, 60s and 70s.
“I’m hoping we can create a monthly event where Irish people of all ages can get together, and exchange experiences of living abroad and making Vancouver home.”
Spillane, who founded the Moving2Canada website, says all are welcome to attend, as “you don’t need to be Irish to come have fun!”
He’s promising there will be no speeches or schedule of events, just a fun night where people can meet up and socialize.
- Open trad session – all musicians welcome!
- Standing is allowed, even at the bar 🙂
- Meet with older Irish expats that have been here for decades
- The walls of the bar are not decorated with TVs!
- Guinness on tap for $6.75
- Darts board
- Ping pong table upstairs
- Lots of free parking nearby
And if this week’s event goes well, there could be more nights out to follow.
“I’m on a mission to create a monthly social event for the Irish community, so I hope everyone can come to support the event so we do it on a monthly basis.
“I want to recreate the feeling of Irish pub life right here in Vancouver. I’d love for people to come along, bring their friends, and maybe even make some new ones on the night,” Spillane added.
