It started innocently enough, and as a continuation of a time-honoured tradition among Irish people leaving the nation’s shores.
Reddit user, Jonesy27, uploaded a picture of his ‘Leaving Ireland Shop’ online ahead of his departure. It came complete with Lyons tea bags, King crisps, Dubliner cheese, Denny pudding, and Mikado biscuits.
But as soon as he had it posted, fellow visitors to the website were calling out his food choices and questioning his preferences.
“Kings? Sooner you leave the better for us all,” one wrote.
“Lyons tae, king crisps and denny puddings! You’re everything that’s wrong with this country,” another fumed.
“I hope it’s just for a week, because that all the tea bags you have enough for. A week,” a commenter complained.
He was also accused of “notions”, and was dubbed a “monster” for his choice of crisps.
But the man behind the picture took it all in his stride, telling his detractors that “the comments on here have cracked me up :-)”.
