Effective January 2nd 2013, the Federal Skilled Trades Program will improve the flow of foreign tradespeople into Canada. The program is open to tradespeople with:
- Relevant qualifications (by Canadian standards, i.e. meets National Occupation Classification (NOC) requirements for the profession), AND
- Work experience (two years) in the five years before you apply; AND
- An arranged job in Canada OR certification of qualification by a Canadian province.
Candidates that meet these criteria can apply for permanent residency through this program.
This will differ from the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) for professionals as selection will be on a pass/fail model, as opposed to a points system. There were only 3,000 places available in 2013 and some trades have a cap.
